PARSOL Deliverables - Extranets

This project seeks to establish a secure extranet infrastructure between local authorities and external agencies, to enable the business requirement of the PARSOL Exchange system. The infrastructure utilised within this project, is to be such that it can be deployed at the national level (national central hub with local authority nodes), regional level (regional hub with local authority nodes) or combined hub and node at the local authority level.

Enhanced LGOL-net system

PARSOL has taken the original LGOL-net messaging software, developed under the LAWS National Project, and has added messaging functionality to enable the software to be used as the basis for PARSOL Exchange. PARSOL EXCHANGE is a messaging hub and spoke architecture which is used to support the business requirements of PARSOL stream 2 - Consultations & negotiations and Development Plans. The original software was sufficient for implementation at the nodes but additional messaging functionality was required for the hub.

The additional functionality includes: validation and command process, workflow activities: message constructor, message broadcast, message splitter, message destructor, condition checker, message merge and message transform.

The latest version of LGOL-net software and documentation (v 2.0 which includes these developments) can be freely downloaded from www.lgolnet.org . For those authorities wishing to implement an LGOL-net node there is a user group and discussion forums on the LGOL-net website: http://lgolnet.org/phpBB2/index.php which may be of assistance to you.

    
PARSOL Exchange messaging hub    
The hub is sited at the Planning Portal as they already had the infrastructure needed to support heavy Internet access. It is also agreed that the Planning Portal will provide support for the hub during the pilot over the next year. The software implemented to run the hub can be viewed at the above link on the LGOLnet web site. The specification of the servers acquired to run the hub is contained within the following document:

PARSOL Exchange nodes    
For the purposes of the pilot, nodes are being implemented in Wandsworth Borough Council, Salisbury District Council, West Dorset District Council, Ipswich District Council and Macclesfield Borough Council. Links are also being setup between the hub and the Environment Agency's own extranet. Examples of server builds used to implement the nodes is contained in the attached document.

It is recommended that node administrators also read the PARSOL EXCHANGE Administrator's Guide. It has information which is pertinent to configuring and testing node implementations for use with PARSOL Exchange.
